What is freedom for anarchists?

It’s hard to find a more loaded word in the vocabulary of politics: everyone is for freedom – from a certain point of view… It could be argued that the liberal understanding of this notion has a grasp on the common sense, and radicals are usually aware of marxist views on the matter. But what is the anarchist angle on the concept, and how does it matter for our struggles and visions of desirable futures? Peterson Silva breaks down some of the challenges in defining freedom within the anarchist tradition of political thought: how does it relate to the existence of restrictions, say, in the regular functioning of society? How does it relate to equality? And who is the subject of anarchist freedom?

Peterson Silva is a PhD student from Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), Brazil, currently a visiting researcher in Loughborough University. He studies contemporary political theory and anarchism.
